Spring Doggie Fashion Week 2009

Now I know Fall '09 Fashion Week is happening in New York City now. My mommy has been going to some shows and after parties as this is her business so I decided to do a post on spring doggie fashions not fall as I am more of a wear now dog and I do not shop months ahead of time. So since spring is just around the corner I have hit all the front rows of the Spring Doggie Fashion shows and here are my main picks for the season for doggie fashion.

- Leopard Flamenco Dress

- Red Dance Party Dress

- Sailor Dress

- Mini Gingham Dress

- Chocolate Sandals with dog skull and cross bones

- Board Shorts

- Denim and Corduroy Visor

- Camo Top

- "Got Treats" Bandana

- Swarovski Crystal Collar

I am liking those board shorts for myself and I pray my mom does not put me in the leopard flamenco dress for kicks. I am not a drag dog (not that there is anything wrong with that).

All the above can be purchased at www.poshpuppyboutique.com

Happy Shopping and Chow for now!

Sunday Sermon - Women

This week's Sunday Sermon is a sermon that is very close to my heart. When Q-Ball and I were little puppies and we were taken away from our biological mom, we were placed in a little kennel in a store far away from anything that was comforting and familiar to us. Far away from our mother who fed us and kept us warm with our other siblings. Q-Ball and I would cuddle with each other so we wouldn't be scared in this new environment.

Then one day a human woman walked into the pet shop we were in with her male friend and from what she said, "It was love at first sight!" We being Maltese puppies were quite cute I must add, I don't blame her for loving us on sight. She brought us home that day and although we were a little scared to go into her world we quickly realized that we had found a source of love, food, home, comfort, fun and family. We had a new mom and a brand new life.

That was the first day of my love affair with women. Since then I have been lucky to have so many great women in my life (I call them Aunty's). Women have been a big part of my happiness and I can't tell you how many of them connect with my heart instantly and form a bond. It is a number too big for me to know. Q-Ball was my main female, she was also the boss of me. I miss her so much. However I am a lucky dog to have so many wonderful women around me and to see how they make the world a wonderful place to live.

Yeah sure, many are a little bit of a pain in the neck. They can take forever to get ready while you want to go for a walk now. They can sometimes run a little bit late, or talk on the phones forever about nonsense. They can be a bit hormonal sometimes and make you scratch your head (or ear in my case). They can be temperamental, a little bit jealous and take far too long to shop in stores when you want to be in a park chasing city squirrels. Some are even called the female counterpart of my species when people think they are mean (why I have no idea). However for the love, care, comfort and support I get from them it really makes living in this world a much better place to live. I would hate to think of this world as all male. That would be one smelly, rough, messy, brutal world.

So it saddens me greatly when I hear of the abuse that still runs rampant on this earth of women. It's a world wide epidemic that runs in every country, every culture, every class, every race on this earth.

This pass week we heard of the scandal of the R&B singers Rihanna and Chris Brown. Here is a strong, independent, beautiful, talented, successful, young woman and she is allegedly brutally beaten by her equally strong, talented, successful boyfriend. This shocked the world because this is behavior you don't expect from such a high profile couple.

However what shocked me more was what I read on blog comments from this story. While of course there were many people showing compassion for Rihanna there seemed to be an equal amount of people making comments that she probably deserved it or did something to provoke the beating. I couldn't believe this! What hurt my doggy feelings even more was reading some comments by women who didn't support Rihanna and were siding with Chris Brown. Is this the result of decades of rap music and their misogynist (yes I may be a small dog but I know big words) lyrics and videos? Have generations of women been brainwashed into being anti-woman? Is this some ironical left over residue from slavery where you have to feel you have to subjugate someone to feel superior? In this case, women? Would you want your mother, sister, daughter, friend treated like this? This makes me sad that in a developed country, what many say is the best country in the world, we still think this way and accept abuse against women. I am hoping that when all the facts come out and if Chris Brown is found guilty the public will vote with their pocketbooks and Chris Brown will accept the consequences of his actions, get help and spend the rest of his life campaigning against violence against women.

This week women, actors, and activists converged in Washington DC for the "Turning Pain to Power Tour" which spoke out against violence against women worldwide, especially certain nations in Africa, primarily The Democratic Republic of Congo where widespread rape is used as a weapon of war.

Do you know if you got your DNA analysed that you would be very surprised about how diversified your gene pool is. While some of this comes from migration many DNA analysts will tell you that one of their main theories for seeing such diversity in your gene pool comes from thousands of years of rape being used as a weapon of war. It is the year 2009 and this is still prevalent today in some nations.

We here at the PPP are big supporters of "Raise Hope for Congo" which strives to help end and bring awareness of the violence occurring in the Congo against their people, children and especially their female population. To know more about this organization please see http://www.raisehopeforcongo.org/

Actress Kerry Washinton said it best at the conference when she said, "If we talk about violence against women, my hope is we don't talk about it as petty gossip but as a social illness that must end. So if that's what's going on, then we need to all be aware this is a problem that goes from the Congo to Hollywood and everywhere in between," said Washington."

If anyone was to try to hurt my mother or any women they would see that even though I may look like a little, white, flurry toy I have the mean mentality of a pit bull and I would defend her till the death. However I am at heart a lover not a fighter so I hope that our world becomes a better place to live in and we honor and love this gender that carries us for months inside their body, has unconditional love for us, feeds us and takes care of us so we can become strong, loving, independent individuals on our own. I am Powder Puff and I love women. Chow for now!

Gossip Friday - February 13th 2009

TGIGF!! Whoa this has been a long week for this pup and I am looking forward to relaxing even more than I usually do this weekend. I have been a very sociable dog around town which makes me a good doggie gossip columnist as I can hear all the juicy tidbits my mommy talks about with her friends.

This week I have only one tidbit of celebrity gossip from the UK newspaper Telegraph. Receiving the Golden Globe for best actor, former hell raiser Mickey Rourke knew exactly who to thank for his recovery after years in the emotional and professional wilderness. "Sometimes," said the star of The Wrestler, and odds-on favourite for next week's best actor Oscar, "when a man's alone, all you got is your dog. This is for my dogs, past and present. They mean the world to me." Certainly, a man who can declare his love for a chihuahua, the armpit accessory of the Paris Hilton set, is a man with nothing to prove. But his firm belief that his pets' companionship had literally saved his life reflects a basic truth: that dogs might just be the world's best therapists.

Hollywood certainly seems to have caught on to this idea. This week alone sees two new canine capers: Bolt, a smart, computer-animated Disney film about a dog that thinks it's a superhero, and Hotel for Dogs, in which two orphans set about saving a city's strays. This past Holiday season we saw Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson appearing in the tear-jerking Marley & Me, an adaptation of the best-selling book that tells the story of the titular Labrador, aka "the world's worst dog".

Of course, dogs don't live as long as people, so it's inevitable that you'll witness the change from sprightly, sausage-stealing puppy to stiff-legged, grey-haired veteran. Walks get slower, sleeps get longer – but every time you look his way, his eyes are full of trust and belief that you will do what's right, when the time comes.

Dog-lovers understand. They would never say, "Are you going to get another one?", knowing that you need time to grieve. When his chihuahua Beau Jack died in 2002, says Rourke, "I gave him mouth-to-mouth for 45 minutes before they peeled me off. I didn't go home for two weeks." But, the actor continued, it's worth all the pain. "I truly believe God created dogs for a cause. They are the greatest companions a man could ever have."

And one day I hope for my mom to add more dogs to our households to make both our lives that much greater. Chow for now!

Pet Finder Pet of the Week - Nip

It's what has turned out to be one of my favorite posts. It's Petfinder Pet of the Week and today's spotlight is Nip, a male adult Havanese.

While I was in Central Park yesterday with my mom taking advantage of the particularly mild weather we met just about every dog in the city. However this dog walker passed us with two young Havanese puppies. My mom went crazy playing with them and although they were dare I say begrudgingly cute, I did not like the attention my mom was paying them. She seemed a little besotted. So then I decided to attack the bigger one. I went under my mom's legs and the other dog circled her so with all our leashes tangled we brought my mom down to the ground. Hard. She was a little peeved with me and I got a tongue lashing.

So today I pick a Havanese as a way to apologize to my mom for making her fall. Nip's bio is as follows:

NO, HE DOES NOT BITE (Many people wonder because of his name if he bites.)

Prior to adding a new dog to your family, please visit www.justdogbreeds.com to learn about the various personalities and characteristics which will assist in matching the right dog to your lifestyle.

Nip is somewhat reserved--what you might call a shy guy. He enjoys the company of other dogs, therefore needs another dog in his new home to help him overcome his timidity. He should be in a home without small children.

He was born sometime in late 2001 and is approximately 12 to 13 pounds. He and his siblings were originally dumped in a trash can outside a city dog pound when they were about 5 weeks old. That is horrendous!!!

Nip missed out on the social skills his mother would have taught him because he was separated from her too young in his life. As a result, he is much more comfortable with other dogs than with new people. He will require more patience and understanding when adding him to your family.

It is important to realize that there is ALWAYS a period of adjustment when adding a rescue dog to a family. that will take time and patience and understanding. Some require more time and patience than others and there may very well be an issue or two to work through in order to earn their trust and overcome their fears and lack of socialization.

He needs someone willing to look past his fear and apprehension and to help him come out of his shell. He is painfully shy.

His ideal home would be a female only home, or if there is a male in the home, he must be gentle and patient with him and be willing to work through his issues.

Please remember, THERE ARE NO PERFECT DOGS, no matter what the background. Dogs generally become what you make of them through your efforts, love, patience, and understanding. And--if you are willing to overlook their slight imperfections, they will certainly overlook yours!

He was in a home for about 10 months where he decided he does not care for small children. He will need a quiet, adult-only home with a family who will help him regain his confidence and work on socialization. He is also apprehensive about some men, but could work on that issue if someone were willing and patient enough. He obviously learned the dislike/fear of men as a result of the man in his short-term home. When they returned him, he made a wide circle around the man and gave him a look that showed his feelings of dislike for him. It was a look that obviously said 'I hate you!'

Please contact k9resq@sbcglobal.net for more information about this pet.

This pet is up to date with routine shots.
This pet has been altered.

That Nip is quite a looker, almost as handsome as me. I hope you know someone who would give Nip a happy, healthy home if not yourself. Chow for now!

Dogs, Pigs and Koalas in the News

Today on the PPP we have some animals news from animals all around the world.

We will start with Stump, a Sussex spaniel who nearly died in 2004, won Best in Show at the 133rd Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City on Tuesday night – the oldest dog ever to receive the title.

The crowd cheered when judge Sari Brewster Tietjen pointed to the 10-year-old dog, who beat out a Scottish deerhound, a Scottish terrier, a standard poodle, a puli, a Brussels griffon and a giant Schnauzer.

According to Westminster Kennel Club spokesman David Frei, a team of vets at Texas A&M University saved Stump five years ago. "His whole body completely quit, they did [some] miracle, because here he is now, looking great and just won Westminster," said Stump's co-owner, Scott Sommer. Stumps owner says Stumps is a real people person who loves crowds and is quite a ham. Congratulations Stumps! I myself am starting to get a little long in the tooth but can still do all the amazing cute things I did when I was a puppy so Stumps proves older dogs can still be champions.

Speaking of hams, I have some sad news from the west coast of Coast Rica. Lola the pig who is the main mascot of Lola's Beach has been suffering from an illness and the once big, robust, healthy pig has had her health slowly deteriorating. Lola has had a great life, living on the beach in Costa Rica, being fed scraps from the restaurant on the beach, having her picture taken by the dozens of tourists that stop by everyday, not being served as the platter du jour. Yes, Lola has had a great life. When she goes to that big pig pen in the sky she will be sorely missed. To Lola! The original ham.

Our last bit of news in the PPP today is a little bit sad and a little bit happy. As many of you know, the state of Victoria, Australia has been hit by wildfires that have burned thousands of acres, killed over a hundred people and has blackened forests where many of the wildlife has been displaced or killed.

On his way to put out a fire, firefighter David Tree and his team saw in the middle of a backburning at Mirboo North a stricken koala.

"I could see she had sore feet and was in trouble, so I pulled over the fire truck. She just plonked herself down, as if to say 'I'm beat'," he said.

"I offered her a drink and she drank three bottles.

"The most amazing part was when she grabbed my hand. I will never forget that."

Mr Tree and his brigade then received an emergency call-out to save a house, but minutes later Sam was picked up by wildlife carers.

Carer Jenny Shaw said she suffered burns on her paws and was in a lot of pain, but was on the road to recovery.

She was put on an IV drip and is on antibiotics and pain relief treatment.

"She is lovely - very docile - and she has already got an admirer. A male koala keeps putting his arms around her," Ms Shaw said. "She will need regular attention and it will be a long road to recovery, but she should be able to be released back into the wild in about five months."

Sam is one of 22 koalas, 14 ringtail possums, several wallabies and eastern grey kangaroos that have been handed into Gippsland carers.

If you like to donate to the "Wildlife Victoria" fund and help the animals that are being displaced here is the link:

http://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/cms/index.php

Seeing that picture of the Koala holding the fireman's hand as he gives her some water has melted my little puppy heart (and I'm a New York City dog). I am so happy Sam will be fine and eventually be brought back to the wilderness. With that happy ending I end today's post by with a "Chow for now".

A Hideous Act

Once in awhile we get a story at the PPP that brings back memories of the death of my beloved sister Q-Ball. A story where someone does something quite hideous to an animal(s) and the amazing response from people doing their best to rectify it.

Today we have a story from Sheffield, UK. These four newborn puppies are lucky to be alive after being thrown into an icy canal and left to drown. The tiny pups were stuffed into a garbage bag, along with a heavy paving slab to weigh them down and thrown into a freezing canal.

However the ice failed to break and the pups were left freezing in the canal until a passer-by heard them whimpering. Within minutes the RSPCA arrived at the canal and were desperately trying to reach the puppies - which were 20ft from the bank.

Officers immediately called firemen who arrived with specialist 'grab nets' which they used to haul the puppies to safety. One of the pups had to be given the kiss of life after it stopped breathing just before being removed from the ice.

The puppies, named Bruce, Barry, Jacob and Gareth, were so young they had still not opened their eyes and rescuers said they would have died if they remained on the ice any longer. It is not clear what breed the newborns are but RSPCA officers said the pups were no more than one week old.

The cruel act has been condemned by the RSPCA officers which is searching for those responsible.

Matt Bell, RSPCA chief inspector for South Yorkshire, said: 'This was a horrendous act of cruelty against four tiny puppies and we're urging anyone who can help us find the person responsible to get in touch.'These puppies were treated in the most callous way, thrown into the river in a black bin liner and weighted down with a paving slab. 'It was just fortunate that the ice held otherwise they'd have died.'

The four pups are currently being looked after by foster parents who are feeding them every two hours. RSPCA officers said the pups would be ready for adoption in around two months time.

I can't understand how some humans can be so cruel, so heartless, so hideous and others can be such heroes, so giving, so loving and caring.

How can one human fling these adorable, cute, innocent beings into a frozen river to die and another human can go all out to save them? This is the same question I had in my mind when Q-Ball was killed by a cold, heartless man that did not even stop to acknowledge her death and all the people, police and vets that did everything they could to save her life.

At least this story unlike Q-Ball's had a happy ending and hopefully all the puppies will be adopted by loving humans and live long, happy and healthy lives. We at the PPP believe in karma. Those who helped the puppies will have better karma and the perpetrator of this hideous act will pay for their act through their karma. That's what makes me get through the day. Chow for now!
